Saturday, my parents, Josephine, and I went for a nice drive. We took the Edmonds-Kingston ferry (in the middle there), then drove across the Hood Canal bridge and up 101 toward Port Angeles. The first stop was Dungeness Spit, a funny little spit of land poking about five miles out into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. And it's growing, apparently. Before exploring the spit, we stopped for a Josephine-prepared picnic (her signature chicken drumsticks, sundry fruit and vegetables, bread and cheese, and an amazing pumpkin cake, one of the best cakes I've ever tasted). The spit itself is like nothing else, sort of a beach except with ocean on both sides. It has possibly the highest density of driftwood anywhere, and it's full of stones that have been ground amazingly round and smooth. It's a nice place to sit and listen to the surf, or it would be if it weren't fairly full of people (on a Saturday anyway). For some reason it was incredibly bright out there though -- I started getting a headache from the bright sun reflecting off the bleached-white rocks and pieces of driftwood. Our next stop was Hurricane Ridge, up into the mountains above Port Angeles. We took pictures of deer and admired the view, and Josephine and I played a game of Scrabble at what felt vaguely like the top of the world, with my parents looking on and criticising our use of Scrabble words that aren't "real". I did put QUEENED on a double-double for some major points. However, it started to get late and we got back in the car before finishing the game. On the way back, Josephine and I worked on my Cantonese. I can now count to 100 fairly reliably, and my basic arithmetic is pretty good. Plus we exchanged mildly dirty remarks in Cantonese and giggled while my parents wondered what was so funny. Pictures later. August 29, 2005 10:52 AMCategories: food - travel TrackBack |
