Goldberg: Future Work
Possible intended audiences and their implications
- Non-composers. This would guide Goldberg in the direction
of a game or educational application, aimed more at providing
an entertaining or educational experience than producing a musical
result. This is an appealing possibility, but not our intention.
- Nontraditional composers. Targeting composers that are
experimental, highly eclectic in their methods, or not musically
trained tends to push Goldberg in certain directions:
- Using the Rating or Choosing interface rather than the
more traditional Music Processor metaphor.
- Integrating with other kinds of composition tools.
- Supporting user configurability and extensibility.
- Providing several kinds of visual representation.
- Traditional composers. If we assume our users are going to
be musically trained and deeply familiar with the process of
writing music on staff paper and less likely to be interested
in "computer composition", Goldberg is pushed in other directions:
- Using the Music Processor metaphor.
- Using standard music notation for visual representation
whenever possible.
- Integration with other tools is probably less important.
- User configurability and extensibility are probably less important.
