Side Dish Thingy
1c uncooked Japanese short grain rice
1.5c water
1c frozen green peas
6 white mushrooms (chopped into pea-sized cubes)
1 green onion (finely chopped)
a bit of regular onion (finely chopped)
a bit of garlic (either crushed or powder)
2T soy sauce
vegetable oil
cook the rice (standard instructions - put the water and rice in a pot,
boil and simmer for 20 minutes. let stand for 10 minutes)
heat the oil in a frying pan big enough for all the ingredients
when hot (a drop of water should sizzle immediately), dump the onions in
and stir-fry for 1 minute. if they start to burn, turn down the heat.
add the frozen peas.
when the peas are bright green, add the mushrooms.
saute everything until the mushrooms are cooked (about 3 minutes)
add the rice
add the soy sauce - add more for flavour.
you can make variations - this is pretty similar to fried rice (add chopped
broccoli, carrots, or a scrambled egg).
