Observation of Mental Models

From an assignment from my user interfaces course.

The team and some background

The Music Machines archive is a collection of information, images, software, diagrams, and so on about musical equipment. The site has a certain organization imposed on it by its maintainer (me). The potential for a conflict between a user's model of how such a site might work and how it's actually organized is large.

Basically, I took Kurt to the root WWW page of the music machines site and gave him no further instruction. I gave him the tasks one at a time and let him explore. Occasionally, he got a little help (detailed later).

The subject was given the following tasks (links lead to descriptions of what happened during that task; interpretation later).

Descriptions are somewhat edited to save space (in several places, Kurt did a little more generalized browsing -- at several points, for example, he remembered things he'd noticed before while he happened to be browsing).

The entire session (about 30 minutes) was recorded in CD-quality mono sound as one large sound file.
